There are literally thousands of companies across the US and Canada that provide some level of property management to home owners under various
conditions and meeting a variety of requirements. This blog is going to try to help home owners and also people who have rental homes navigate some of the issues associated with hiring a company, a friend or a neighbor to look after your home.
We will provide checklists and discuss topics that many people may not think about when they are about to leave their home for an extended period – a week , a month or several months. There are insurance issues to be concerned about, security of the home and then a whole lot of practical issues to take care of. If you follow some of these items on the check list, while it will not guarantee that you will not have any issues, but it will sure increase the odds that your home will be fine when you return.
Residential property management is a loose term to describe situations that
include home sitters, residential monitors, alarm companies and residential home renters. Even people who rent their vacation homes may find this blog of interest as a check list of things to monitor as you prepare your home for rental to vacationers.
One area that we always emphasize above all else is for homeowners to check with their insurance companies if they are going to be away for any length of time. Most have requirements in terms of how often you should have someone visiting your home in order to maintain your insurance. Many are good with once a week, while others require a visit once a day especially in winter time were the temperature is below freezing.
